If you have decided that you want to try to whiten and brighten your smile at home you must be aware of the teeth whitening products that are available to choose from. Many people will go to their dentist to have the their teeth professionally whitened but just as many will try to do it at home to save money on this fairly expensive procedure. If an at home over the counter solution is chosen there are really only two ways to effect the color of a person’s teeth. One is a whitening kit and the other is by using toothpaste with a whitening agent. With the whitening kits there is the chance of some irritation of the gums or sensitivity of the teeth but this only lasts for a few days.

The at home whitening treatments use either a peroxide based whitener or a straight bleaching agent. You should understand that this is a very important part of the process since it is what literally changes the color of a person’s teeth. This is how the stains are removed, the yellowing taken off and the white returned. But, these over the counter products are not as strong as those used by your dentist and so they will likely require more than one treatment to get the results you want. But, they are also much cheaper than the treatments at the dentist’s office and so this is still a reasonably cost effective method to choose. At fewer than twenty dollars a kit this is a very reasonable treatment plan in comparison to the four to nine hundred dollar cost of get your teeth whitened at the dentist’s office.

If you choose to use these teeth whitening products at home you must know that they will only whiten your natural teeth. They do not work on dentures, crowns or veneers. You should also expect that the at home treatments take longer to perform and last for a shorter period of time. Caution when using anything new is important so do not use them if you have gum disease, are under sixteen or if you are pregnant. As well, protect yourself from disappointment by making sure that the package is stamped with the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. It means its been tested and found to be a safe, reliable product.
